Guidelines & Policies for Mentors

In order to be a successful mentor, you must understand and accept the following expectations:

  • One year commitment – Being a consistent, reliable mentor is very important when guiding others. It takes time to build trust and develop an understanding of today’s youth. That is why all of our mentors are expected to volunteer for at least one year. This commitment is supported by research. Studies consistently show that mentoring longer than one year are most likely to generate positive youth outcomes, while those lasting fewer than 12 months can actually be more detrimental to our youth than not having a mentor at all.

Be a Good Mentor – By dedicating your time and undivided attention while video chatting and showing him or her that you care you’ll have a positive impact on their lives.

Be an advocate for Split2econd – There are hundreds of youth in our community who wish that they had someone to speak with in times of need and we’d like as many mentors as possible to facilitate that need. Perhaps you know others who might make a good mentor. Encourage them to volunteer their time to Split2econd and make a difference in the lives of others

Three Key Points:

1. Moods, attitudes and relationships have ups and downs.
2.Trust takes time to develop.
3. Connections don’t happen by chance. But we may only need a chat to make an impact on the lives of our youth.

Guidelines:

1. Be consistent, caring, and dependable so that he/she can trust you. Specifically, avoid making promises you can’t keep.
2. Be an advocate for the youth. Assure that he/she matters.
3. Avoid discussing your personal and family background or circumstances.
4. Be supportive. Do not pass judgment regarding any situation that the mentee may be going through. It is appropriate to address misbehavior within the context of the mentoring but leave the “parenting” to the parents.
5. Although all conversations are confidential, any and all crimes, child abuse (see policy #3) or threats to the public must be reported to your local authorities immediately to assure the safety of the youth and society.
6. Do not purchase any gifts or send monies for any reason or occasion.
